On the way to Lidl

On the way to Lidl to get cardboard boxes

We passed professors, pop stars and plumbers

Sitting side by side in the old dust and new sweat

You told me about your animations for Arabic Sesame Street

On the way to Lidl to get cardboard boxes

We passed a funereal pyre of deflated vests on the kerbside

Smelling like plastic dolls and fake tan in summer heat

Our tears of a clown on finding the vests empty inside

On the way to Lidl to get cardboard boxes

We passed a cigarette between us in the carpark. It lessens the nerves and the boredom you said.

I explained that the boxes would become dens. That dens are like houses, and that the kids would imagine great palaces as they stacked the boxes high with sticky tape

You told me the story of how you first arrived in Lesvos

On the way to a German supermarket in Germany one day,

Inshallah,

We will pass Syrian dates and Scottish biscuits. And Greek cigarettes, if you must.

For our Time of Youth* has now gone

For Ramy, September 2016
